For Authors and Publishers

The manuscript is complete...

And now it needs polishing so it's ready for publication.

This is where I come in.

I want you to feel confident publishing your book knowing it's been lovingly edited by a qualified and professional editor who cares as much about your writing as you do.

Proof-editing (from £16 per 1,000 words)

This is a hybrid service that incorporates proofreading with some light editing.

By choosing this service, you will get all the traditional checks of a proofread along with some suggestions and corrections that go beyond just making sure the text is definitively correct.

Proofreading checks include:

  • Spelling mistakes

  • Grammatical errors

  • Typos

  • Punctuation problems

  • Syntax issues

  • Correct use of vocabulary

  • Inconsistencies

  • Redundancies and filler words

  • Capitalisation confusion

  • Missing words or duplications

  • Non-inclusive language

  • Certain formatting issues

  • Widows and orphans

  • Ladders and rivers

  • Table, figure and image discrepancies

Light editing includes (but is not limited to):

  • Some minor rewording to improve clarity and word choice

  • Swapping paragraphs or passages around to improve the flow

  • Changing sentence structure and length

When budget and time constraints are of the essence, this could be the service for you.

It involves a more thorough edit of your work, but as I use MS Word's track changes and comments tools, you can accept or reject any changes or suggestions I make.

My suggestions and corrections are always intended to help lift your writing and improve readability. Any comments will be kind and considerate.

I will keep to any style guide, tone of voice, point of view, etc. and use your approach so your voice is never removed from your writing.

What's included?

  • A bespoke style sheet detailing the editorial decisions made throughout your manuscript. This will include decisions such as the use of the Oxford comma, double or single quote marks and whether to use -ise or -ize spellings.

Style sheets help to ensure consistency and can be handed to other editors and proofreaders working on your manuscript. They're also an invaluable point of reference if you intend to write a book series with repeat characters, locations, etc.

  • Regular updates and open communication throughout the project.

I know you're going to be wondering how things are going while your manuscript is with me, so I'm happy to keep you updated along the way. And if you have any questions or anything you want to discuss with me, just drop me a message, and I'll get back to you ASAP.

  • 10% off your next editing project with me.

Maybe you have another novel already in progress. If so, I want to reward the loyalty and trust you have placed in me by offering a discount if you choose to work with me again.

Proofreading (from £11 per 1,000 words)

Proofreading comes at the very end of the editing process and is usually undertaken once the manuscript has been typeset

Although it may be tempting to skip this stage when your manuscript has already been in the hands of capable editors, this is the last time anyone will check for errors missed in earlier rounds of editing or pick up on those introduced during editing and typesetting.

My proofreading service involves checking for:

  • Spelling mistakes

  • Grammatical errors

  • Typos

  • Punctuation problems

  • Syntax issues

  • Correct use of vocabulary

  • Inconsistencies

  • Redundancies and filler words

  • Capitalisation confusion

  • Missing words or duplications

  • Non-inclusive language

  • Certain formatting issues

  • Widows and orphans

  • Ladders and rivers

  • Table, figure and image discrepancies

Not yet ready for a full edit?

Then why not try a:

10,000-word proof-edited agent teaser (£320 or £360 with a follow up call*)
Perfect for those:

  • Querying with agents

Many agents request to see an extract before deciding whether to accept your novel. Therefore, it's crucial this extract is of the highest standard if you want them to take you and your manuscript seriously.

  • Unable to afford a full manuscript edit

The costs for publishing a book can seem steep when you're new to the process and haven't yet seen rewards for your work.

Although a professionally edited and proofread book is always preferable, if your budget can't stretch that far, this may be the perfect alternative.

What's included?

I'll work through the first 10,000 words in exactly the same way I would if I were working on your full manuscript, providing corrections and suggestions where appropriate to elevate your writing.

However, I'll also provide you with:

  • A report highlighting areas where you excel and others that need more attention. It will include examples from the manuscript and aims to offer constructive feedback for you to implement throughout the remaining text. Where possible, I'll refer you to resources I think you'll find helpful.

  • A bespoke style sheet detailing the editorial decisions made throughout your manuscript. This will include decisions such as the use of the Oxford comma, double or single quote marks and whether to use -ise or -ize spellings.

Style sheets help to ensure consistency and can be handed to other editors and proofreaders you hire to work on your manuscript. They're also an invaluable point of reference if you intend to write a book series with repeat characters, locations, etc. They're also completely editable, so you can update them as you work through the rest of your manuscript.

  • A follow up call or written communication once I've returned the teaser*.

Once you receive your teaser and report back, I know you'll likely feel a mix of emotions. You might initially feel overwhelmed by the scale of feedback or comments and want some guidance on how to implement the changes and move forward.

I'm happy to talk you through any feedback or answer any queries you have. We can schedule a call or you can send me an email and I'll get back to you ASAP.

  • 10% off your next editing project with me.

Maybe you have another novel already in progress. If so, I want to reward the loyalty and trust you have placed in me by offering a discount if you choose to work with me again.

Are we a perfect match?

1,000-word sample edit (£25)

It can be hard finding the right editor, and you want to know we'll be a perfect match before you hand over your project.

That's OK. I get it. It works both ways.

For less than the price of your next takeaway, I'll check for:

  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar errors

  • Syntax, capitalisation and hyphenation issues

  • Non-inclusive language

  • Ways to improve flow and increase concision

  • Inconsistencies (in both text and format)

Where necessary, I'll write comments explaining my suggestions and corrections.

This allows you to get an insight into how I work, what to expect from my service(s) and decide if I'm the right editor for you.

This service might also help you gain some insight into your writing that you can apply moving forward.

And as if that wasn't enough, if you choose to hire me for the full edit of your manuscript, I'll deduct the £25 off the total cost.
