Audiobook Editing

Bring clarity to your words when read out loud

Audiobooks allow readers to enjoy your novel when, in this ever-busy world, finding time to sit and read a physical copy is growing increasingly challenging.

Ensure your novel listens as clearly as it reads with audiobook editing.

'I am so grateful for your thoroughness and diligent curiosity, not to mention that you are so much better at maths than me! You spotted several absolute howlers and were also very helpful in making the manuscript suitable for reading aloud. A superlative job, for which you deserve huge credit. Thank you.'

— L. S. Hilton (Audible Original author)

What is audiobook editing?

Audiobook editing offers all the benefits of line and copyediting – improving flow, readability, engagement, accuracy, consistency and grammar – but has a heavy focus on clarity and readability out loud.

In fiction, it's common to have speech cut off, for dialogue tags to be missing, to use abbreviations, etc. but these don't always transfer well over audio. A listener can't see that dialogue is starting on a new line to denote a new speaker, abbreviations (when long or using a string of them) can be hard to follow, and long sentences are difficult for narrators to read when it's imperative they breathe.

Whether you want tweaks made to a book you've already published to make it listen-friendly or are writing specifically for audio, audiobook editing makes a huge difference.

Who it’s for

What you get

Writers who’ve written a story specifically for audio or novelists who want their books to read clearly and as intended when visual cues no longer guide the experience.

My deep line-by-line edit of your manuscript looks for many things, including:

  • Inconsistency in text and formatting

  • Correct use of vocabulary

  • Confusing/long sentence structure

  • Space for narrators to breathe

  • Unfinished thoughts/sentences

  • Redundancies and filler words

  • Clichés and misused words

  • Style, spelling and grammar issues

  • Unusual paragraph and sentence flow

  • Lacklustre word choices

  • Conscious language

  • Correctly used/missing dialogue tags and beats

  • Appropriate dialogue to character

  • Tense and/or POV changes

  • Basic fact-checking

You'll also get:

  • A custom style sheet detailing all the editorial decisions made to keep your manuscript consistent

  • A global author queries sheet for queries or fixes that appear throughout

Typical duration: 3–4 weeks (depending on the length of the manuscript)

And if that wasn’t enough... I'll proofread your cover and blurb for free before it's available to download or stream.

How it works

Background.png

1

You send your manuscript at least 24 hours before the edit is due to commence. This allows me to ensure there are no issues opening it and work can start as planned.

2

I complete an intense read-through of your manuscript, making direct changes and leaving comments as appropriate. I'll provide you with a weekly update and query anything I'm unsure on.

3

I return your track-changes copy so you can see all the insertions, deletions and suggestions, along with a custom style sheet and global author queries (if applicable).

4

You review the edited manuscript, accepting, rejecting or amending any direct change or suggestion as you see fit, leaving you with a clearer, more accessible version of your book.
